Southern Ropes UK is back at IMPA London for a second year running, on 22–23 September at the QEII Centre in Westminster. Here’s what the event actually is, why we go, and — more usefully — what a year of conversations with ship managers and procurement teams has told us about how marine buying is changing.

What IMPA London Is

IMPA London is the largest maritime event in the world built specifically around ship supply and procurement, run by the International Marine Purchasing Association. Over two days it brings senior procurement directors, superintendents and purchasing managers — with buying authority across thousands of vessels globally — together with suppliers and manufacturers from more than 60 countries. It isn’t a general maritime trade show; it’s built for one relationship specifically: the one between the people who specify what a vessel needs and the people who supply it.

Why We Exhibit

Most of our commercial marine business is built on repeat relationships with ship managers, port operators and marine contractors who know exactly what they need. IMPA London is different — it’s the one part of the year we sit in the same room as procurement teams we’ve never spoken to, fleet managers weighing up their current rope supplier against alternatives, and technical superintendents who want to ask pointed questions about certification and traceability before they’ll consider switching. A product page can’t answer those questions the way a face-to-face conversation can, and a good number of the accounts we now supply regularly started as a five-minute conversation on the stand.

What We’re Seeing in Marine Procurement

A year of stand conversations and account relationships gives a reasonably clear read on where ship supply buying is heading. Three shifts stand out.

Documentation is now the deciding factor, not an afterthought.

Procurement teams increasingly ask for certified break loads, batch traceability and material data sheets before price is even discussed — not because the rope has changed, but because their own audit and class-compliance obligations have tightened. A supplier who can produce that paperwork instantly is doing more to win the order than a supplier who can shave a few percent off the quote.

Fleets are consolidating their supplier base.

Rather than sourcing rope, rigging and deck stores from a long list of regional suppliers, more ship managers are actively narrowing to fewer, better-vetted relationships they can audit properly and hold accountable across the whole fleet. That raises the bar to get on the list in the first place, but it also means the relationship, once won, tends to be sticky — which is exactly why events like IMPA matter more than a cold enquiry ever could.

Buyers are diversifying where they source from.

Global trade friction over the past couple of years has made procurement teams noticeably more cautious about depending on a single country or single supplier for anything safety-critical. UK manufacturing and stockholding is a genuine advantage in that conversation — it’s a shorter, more transparent supply chain to explain to an auditor than a multi-hop import route, and it’s a point we find comes up unprompted on the stand.
