Polysteel 8-strand is a plaited, torque-free rope built for serious mooring and towing. The square-braid construction won’t kink, hockle or spin under load, absorbs surge comfortably and stows flat the Polysteel of choice for commercial vessels, tugs and fishing fleets. Floating, UV-resistant, available up to 76mm.
Polysteel 8-strand is plaited from high-tenacity copolymer fibres in a balanced square braid — four pairs of strands, two left-laid and two right-laid. The construction is torque-free, so the rope won’t rotate, kink or hockle under load, and it runs cleanly through fairleads, over drum ends and around bitts.
This is the construction the commercial world moors on. Supplied from 24mm to 76mm, Polysteel 8-strand handles the loads of coasters, tugs, ferries and trawlers while remaining light enough to float and to heave by hand — a real safety and manpower advantage over heavier polyester when running lines ashore. The plaited structure flakes down flat on deck and in rope lockers, with no coiling direction to worry about.
Polysteel resists UV, rot, oil and most chemicals, retains its strength wet or dry, and its buoyancy keeps lines visible and clear of propellers during mooring operations.
Commonly specified for commercial mooring lines, towing, trawl warps and industrial hawsers, 8-strand splices readily and delivers a long, predictable service life with minimal maintenance. For smaller-diameter general-purpose work, see Polysteel 3-strand. For a flexible single braid for winches and heavy towing, see Polysteel 12-strand.
