A dynamic rope is designed to stretch under load, absorbing the energy of a falling climber and reducing impact force on the body, anchors and belay device. A static rope, sometimes called a low-stretch rope or semi-static rope, has minimal stretch and is designed for controlled descent, abseiling, rappelling, and rope access work where a sudden load is not expected. Using a static rope for lead climbing is dangerous. The lack of dynamic stretch transfers the full force of a fall directly to the climber.
Single ropes are the most common type for sport climbing, top-rope climbing, and straightforward trad routes. They are clipped to every piece of protection and used with a single strand through the belay device. Half ropes, also called double ropes, use two strands clipped alternately, reducing rope drag on wandering routes and providing a backup strand. Twin ropes are also two-strand systems but are always clipped together, offering redundancy on ice climbing and alpine routes. Choosing between single and twin ropes, or between single ropes and half ropes, depends on the route type and the expected rope drag.
Rope diameter affects weight, handling and durability. Thinner ropes, typically below 9.5mm, are lighter and produce less rope drag, making them well suited to sport climbing and long routes. Thicker ropes above 9.8mm are more durable and better suited to top roping and high-frequency environments such as climbing walls, where abrasion resistance matters more than weight. Most belay devices work across a range of diameters, but check compatibility before specifying thinner ropes.
Fall factor is the ratio of fall distance to rope length in the system. A high fall factor, such as falling above your last piece of protection, places maximum load on the rope and the anchors. A low fall factor, with a large amount of rope out, is less severe because more rope is available to absorb the energy. Dynamic ropes are rated based on standard test falls at a fall factor of 1.77. The number of falls a rope can withstand at this rating indicates its durability during hard falls.
Dry treatment is a water-resistant coating applied to the fibres of the rope sheath and, in some cases, the core. Untreated rope absorbs water on wet rock or in rain, which adds weight, reduces handling performance and, critically, can reduce breaking strength. Dry treatment is recommended for ice climbing, alpine routes, wet-weather trad climbing, and caving applications. It is not always necessary in indoor climbing or dry sport-climbing environments.
Avoid storing rope in direct sunlight or near chemicals. After use in dirty or wet conditions, rinse with clean water and allow to dry naturally away from heat sources. Inspect the full length before each use, run the rope through your hands and check for flat spots, stiff sections and sheath damage. Pay particular attention to sections that regularly run over sharp edges or through belay devices. Retire rope immediately if sheath slippage is visible, if the core feels soft or uneven, or following any severe fall or sharp edge contact.
